Don’t be a butt to your bot

Anthropic doesn’t want you to say mean things to Claude. You might hurt its’ feelings. Not making that up.

Anthropics’ newest Usage Policy Update includes this statement: “We’ve added a prohibition on sustained and needless abusive or cruel behavior toward our models. The policy update is meant to apply only in extreme cases, where users repeatedly act cruelly toward our models, with no discernible purpose.”

Excuse me, but you cannot be abusive or cruel to a machine.

What’s behind this ridiculous policy? I think it a result of Big AI wanting to define their agents as entities, because that supports their desire to deflect blame when one of their agents commits a crime. Laying groundwork that you can’t say unpleasant things to their model helps subtly establish personhood.

Big AI desperately wants to be able to ‘blame the bot.’ The law is increasingly denying this defense, as it should.

In the meantime… eat a bug, Claude.
